Blog #4 Takeaway from Kirsten Johnson lecture

                 Upon reflecting on Kirsten Johnsons visit and presentation in class, I can say that we as students learned a lot. As she was walking around, up and down the auditorium she was not only talking to students, but she was examining their postures, expressions, and attitudes. This helps filmmakers understand what they want to convey from their characters. I think the point she was trying to make was, we need to look closer at others to understand them and how to portray them in a film and artistic setting.
             
              She then leaned on the floor. I believe the point that she was trying to about cinematography through that position was that there are different angles that we can see in film and in life. That we as individuals all see the world at different heights. This allows others to see a perspective that they may not have ever experienced before.

              Afterwards we were shown a film sequence of balloons. We learned that she took almost an entire day just to get the right shot for one of the balloon clips. She got into the world of the balloons and put herself and the camera into its space.

             She asked us to look into the eyes of another person for two minutes. I believe this was to teach us about the spaces of peoples and things. And also about communication processes of people.
What I could take away from her lecture is that being able to understand the difference and varying aspects of individuals and emotion we can create great films.

Blog #3 Analysis of a movie sequence

                   I am analyzing the training montage From the movie Rocky. the first shot shows Rocky moving forward and shot from the the front and it moves 180 and transitions to him running from the back while keeping continuity of the sequence. It then transitions to him continuing to run from a front shot in a street market and the park keeping a constant motion forward. After the running it moves to Rocky doing training in the boxing gym from pushups to punching and then the montage continues to him hitting frozen pork to him at the gym again doing push ups. the montage then transitions to more running this time from his right without breaking continuity.
             
                 Next we have a wide shot of Rocky Running up stairs were we have him turn back around in the opposite direction without breaking continuity as the camera moves 90 degrees and maintaining the 180 rule. Lastly we have Rocky posing in a victory pose with a wide shot and then another 90 degrees turn with a close up shot of his face. The intention of the montage was to show how hard and dedicated Rocky was in reaching his goal. It showed the struggle of the character.
           
              The montage is done in the way where Rocky starts his training with cardio then push up and other exercises that involved the hands then we cut back to rocky finishing his training with cardio and posing victoriously on top of a flight of stairs to signal the completion and readiness of what is to come. There was one shot where eye line matched for a quick conversation before the last running sequence began.

Blog #2 Soundwalk

                

The place I chose for the soundwalk is my neighborhood in Homecrest, Brooklyn. I have always stayed in my house, not ever going outside to look and hear what the neighborhood was like. So I thought that now with this assignment it would be a good time, so I step outside, sat down and closed my eyes. The time of day was night after I had gone home from school.

 It was raining, not too hard but I can hear the drops of rain hit the cemented ground like a thousand tiny thumps. The rain was hitting the metal awnings and cars around the block too, the texture was hard like the metal being beat by small nails. It hurt the ear a bit, like a fly buzzing.

The sound of the subways loud movement as it pass though my house was like a bugle stretching a long tune, it zoom thought with the screeching of the meeting of wheel and track. Every once and a while I can hear the sound of cars coming though as their rubber wheels rub through the tar-mated road, as water splash in their wake. Then afterwards silence, then the dripping and falling noise of rain returns.

I could hear the tress rustle as the wind bash against them. The sound of individual branches bending and holding on for life as to avoid being snapped off. At this moment the music of this neighborhood my neighborhood was a cacophony of dyeing metal, a symphony of loud beats like a warzone.

This continued on and on for a while. The sound of rain was washing out all other noises in my neighborhood. I thought to myself, shame maybe I should have done the soudwalk a day earlier.

Class project #1

Blog # 1 Artist Statement

My name is York Chan and I'm not the best talkative person. This has mostly come from a childhood where I really never had any friends. Just sitting outside looking at others play and I was all alone. I have also seen what life can be when you start to slack off or when you lose all hope in your abilities. I have been there, someone who has flunk his first year in Brooklyn college because he just wanted to play around, someone who lacked confidence to do things anymore. The root of this is when I finally started to have friends and experience the world more. And when I finally had it I just wanted more and more. I just wanted to play all the games and watch all the shows in the world and have fun with others. But because of that I also neglected my education. And because of that I started to lose confidence in my abilities because I haven't used them in a long time. And ultimately I became a shut in. After having sitting home for almost 5 years of my life I was finally convinced by my friends to go back to school and pursue a career in something that I would love to do or at least a degree of any kind to get me on my feet again.

After having gone through community college and transferring to Hunter College I have finally founded what I would like to do, that is journalism. I found that I do like writing because hell my essays never go below a B in school. Of course old habits do die hard or rather it will always be there in the end. That is my habit of being lazy and always wanting to just go off somewhere and have fun.

My proudest moment in where I had actually did my best would have to be the time when I wrote a feature story for my journalism class about a commission painter. I felt the high of what being a journalist is and what I can contribute if I ever make the cut to enter this field.

The whole process of journalistic practices and ethics very much intrigues me. But most of all I think it helped me with opening up more in terms of talking more to people because in journalism when you interview someone your talking and you can't be shy about it.

I have seen and felt many kinds of emotions and scenes in life, but thats only a part of many many more. Hopefully with some journalism skills under my belt I will have the chance to experience it all. Because if one thing is certain is that life can never be too boring no matter how much you think it is. This has been York Chan writing from Hunter College Signing off.
